Without blue, there is no Green: The race against time to save our Seas

The climate crisis is advancing with devastating force, and the Pacific island nations are feeling its impact more than almost any other region in the world. At the recent Pacific Islands Forum, held in Tonga, leaders and activists issued an urgent call to action: major greenhouse gas emitters must take responsibility. The Pacific’s stunning ecosystem, home to unparalleled marine biodiversity and landscapes, now faces an existential threat from rising sea levels, warming waters, and ocean acidification.

Resilient Islands in a Threatened Ocean

Pacific islands are on the front lines of the climate crisis. Although these communities have contributed minimally to global carbon emissions, they are paying the highest price. Over the past three decades, global sea levels have risen an average of 9.4 cm. Still, in the tropical Pacific, this increase has reached 15 cm, forcing communities to adapt to protect their homes, cultures, and livelihoods. Under constant pressure, the response from these island inhabitants is one of extraordinary bravery. With banners proclaiming, “We are not drowning, we are fighting” and “The sea is rising, and so are we,” these communities call on the world for solidarity and action. This is not just a cry for help; it’s a reminder that they are still standing strong, determined to resist. But who will join them in this fight?

The triple threat to our Oceans

The ocean faces a triple threat: rising sea levels, warming waters, and acidification. These phenomena, fueled by the massive burning of fossil fuels, are creating a destructive cycle that destabilizes marine ecosystems. Acidification, caused by the absorption of increasing amounts of carbon dioxide, is eroding crucial habitats like coral reefs, which are foundational to marine biodiversity. Marine life, the livelihoods of thousands, and the global food chain are at risk. Rising ocean temperatures and expanding waters accelerate sea-level rise, displacing communities and endangering coastal cities worldwide. Protecting the oceans is not just an ecological challenge but a matter of justice for all who rely on them.

Urgent Action or devastating consequences

The scientific projections are clear: we must limit global warming to 1.5°C to avoid irreversible environmental collapse. To achieve this, global emissions need to be reduced by 43% by 2030 and 60% by 2035. However, we are moving in the opposite direction; emissions rose by 1% in the past year alone. The G20, responsible for around 80% of global emissions, has the moral and strategic responsibility to take urgent action. The most polluting economies and high-impact industries must lead the change, align with climate commitments, and transform their processes to cut emissions. This is not only about preserving marine life but also about ensuring stability for all coastal communities and the ecosystems that sustain life on Earth.

Lessons in Resilience from the Pacific: Adaptation and Hope

The concept of “transformative resilience” was a central theme at this year’s Pacific Islands Forum. Participants demonstrated this resilience from day one when a heavy downpour and an earthquake interrupted the event. For Pacific communities, adapting to adversity is a daily part of life. They have learned to endure, and their strength is a powerful example for the world. “Our ability to remain joyful despite adversity is a fundamental part of our culture,” says Joseph Sikulu, leader of the environmental movement 350. However, resilience cannot be the only answer. These communities need global support and real changes in climate policy to reduce the burdens they face and protect their rights and territories in the face of this crisis.

The role of business leaders: Commitment to real change

The responsibility to act does not rest solely with governments. Companies, especially in sectors such as energy, transportation, and manufacturing, have a unique opportunity to lead change. By adopting clean technologies and sustainable processes, businesses can become agents of positive change. Business leaders have the power to influence their industries and inspire others. Protecting the oceans and reducing the carbon footprint is not only an ethical imperative but a strategic decision that can unlock new opportunities and contribute to a prosperous, sustainable future.

It’s Time for conscious decisions

The fight to protect our oceans and curb climate change is a shared responsibility. The oceans regulate the climate, host much of Earth’s life, and sustain millions of people. The health of our oceans is in our hands, and every action counts. Leaders, companies, and citizens can make a difference. A world where the economy and the environment are aligned is possible if we start taking action now.
